A motion has been passed by the Tipperary County Council to assess the parking situation in Thurles.

The motion was proposed by Councillors Peggy Ryan, Sean Ryan, Micheál Lowry and Kay Cahill-Skehan, with Jim Ryan stating that he would have put his name forward to be involved with the proposal had he been informed about it.

The motion revolves around cars parking in parking spots for extended periods of time, blocking up their use for other town visitors.

These talks come amid the approval of the redevelopment of Liberty Square, Thurles, which will see several key changes made to the area, including the removal of parking from the centre island of the Square.

It was stated that many parking spots are taken up by cars for the entirety of business hours, hindering shoppers from finding adequate parking during the day, and the motion proposes to amend this.

In their motion, the Cllrs said: “We wish to change the arrangements around all day parking in the most central car park(s) in Thurles, including Slievenamon Road, Ulster Bank, and Parnell Street car parks through the Parking Bye Law process.”

Cllr Jim Ryan added that business owners would need to be contacted in advance of any changes, so as to ensure that they are aware of locations in which all-day parking will be available within the town.

He also added that there should be a look into harmonising the parking fees around the town to keep the various car parks consistent with one-another.

The motion was unanimously agreed upon by the Thurles MD Councillors, with a view to begin assessment in Q1 of 2025.
