Dog owners are being reminded to keep their dogs under control to prevent worrying sheep

As lambing season continues across Tipperary, dog owners are being reminded to keep their dogs under control to prevent them from worrying sheep.

Sheep worrying isn't just chasing sheep, it can be the stress, injury or even death of sheep caused by dogs that are out of control, often causing thousands of euro worth of financial damage to farmers.

A single attack can devastate a flock, causing ewes to miscarry and leaving lambs orphaned.

Dog owners can face criminal prosecution and financial liability if their pet harms livestock, and any dogs left unsupervised can stray and attack.

Dog owners are being reminded of their responsibility when out and about with their pets, as well as some simple measures they can take to ensure their dogs are secure and can't escape from their property.

Pet owners are encouraged to always keep dogs on a lead and under control near farmland, ensure gardens are secure – dogs can escape more easily than many people think, report any sightings of out-of-control dogs to the local Garda station or dog warden, and educate friends and family on responsible dog ownership.
