Tipperary student becomes a junior hammer throw world champion

Saturday, September 2 will live long in the memory of our second-year student Luke Thompson, who represented Ireland in New York in the Junior Hammer Throw world championship in the 5.5kg High School section.
Having recently been crowned All-Ireland Champion, Luke travelled to the USA where he competed in the Hammer Throw event at 12th Rock Stadium in Middletown New York against competitors from around the world.
Having thrown 39.78m to win the All-Ireland, Luke even surpassed this to throw a seasonal best of 40m in one of his six throws to win the gold and be crowned world champion.
Luke is a rare talent in his sport and this was recognised by a number of US universities who approached him with potential scholarship offers in the future.
Huge credit goes to Luke’s Coach and uncle, John O’Dwyer of Ballycahill, and to his Athletics Club Templemore AC.
We at Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed are immensely proud of Luke and his achievements and we look forward to following him in a most promising future in his sporting career.
