Tipperary students perform a spectacular version of Grease the Musical

Last week, our Transition Year students, along with second and fifth-year students took to the stage to perform a Newport College first.

In an amazing display of talent and nostalgia, our students brought the audience back to the 50’s, with their electrifying rendition of Grease.

The show was a huge success, where our amazing students showcased their skills and talents to delight their audience with four thrilling performances.

Under the direction of teaching staff Sandra Hynes, Shane Cunniffe and Marie Tuohey, the cast and crew transformed the stage into the iconic Rydell High School complete with leather jackets, poodle skirts and infectious energy.

The students enthralled the audience portraying the trials and tribulations of teenage life and romance.

The leading roles of Danny and Sandy were played by Denis Madden and Faye Ewing.

Their on-stage chemistry and vocals added a layer of authenticity to the timeless love story, leaving the audience captivated from start to finish.

The supporting cast, including the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds also delivered great performances, with each character brought to life with charisma and enthusiasm.

As they went from scene to scene, we must compliment the back-stage crew, who worked tirelessly and meticulously to ensure seamless transitions throughout the performances.

The team worked extremely hard with each backdrop and prop positioning including bringing on stage a custom-made car, which provided much entertainment, as well as a wow factor!

The choreography of the show masterfully crafted by Marie Tuohey was another highlight.

The dancing set to the catching tunes of Grease had the audience tapping their feet and clapping along.

The casts energy and movements perfectly complimented the spirit of the musical, and they reeled the audience in with Summer Nights, Greased Lightning and You’re the One That I Want.

The show was a resounding success and allowed our students to explore and develop their artistic talents, develop confidence and build friendships.

As a school community it was a celebration of the incredible potential among all our students.

When the curtain fell on the spectacular final production, the resounding applause and cheers echoed the sentiment that Grease is indeed the word at Newport College.

With the spirit of Newport College well and truly alive principal Donal Madden took to the stage to have a final word. He complimented all involved noting:

“Grease, the school edition will truly be remembered as the highlight of the year.”

Thanking all involved from staff to students he invited all staff to the stage to sing out with the students one last time, You’re the One That I Want.

The scene was electrifying and characterised the connection between staff and students that is always evident at our school.

A massive thank you to our main sponsor Mulcair Credit Union, and to all our sponsors who supported and believed in our students.

We are eternally grateful for your generosity.

Thanks also to our Parent’s Association, who ran a raffle on the night to raise money for our sensory room.

The Chairperson of the Parent’s Association, Cathriona O’Brien spoke on behalf of the parent body, complimenting the students and staff of the school.

The students and staff are still buzzing, and the entire student body are already talking about the next musical, and many now wondering, how they can get involved.

There is no doubt we are all looking forward to future shows bringing with them more glamour, glitter and Newport College Talent on the stage!
