In a sitting of the Dáil today Mattie McGrath TD said he was disgusted in what was revealed on RTE's Primetime investigation.

Following on from a recent PrimeTime exposé on RTE, which revealed shocking abuse taking place in a nursing home recently, a Tipperary TD has spoken out about the issue in the Dáil

In a sitting of the Dáil today Mattie McGrath TD said: "I am disgusted at what has been revealed by the PrimeTime exposé on the abuse of older people in nursing homes, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

"I challenge HIQA. It is not fit for purpose. Likewise Tusla, who cannot even count the children in their care who have gone missing. Why can we not tackle these big conglomerates? I would say money is changing hands here.

"HIQA is totally unfit for purpose. I saw how it bullied a nursing home in Carrick-on-Suir out of business some years ago by restricting the number of beds it could have open until it would do what HIQA wanted!

"I salute all the care workers and nurses in the small nursing homes in Carrick-on-Suir, Clonmel, Cahir, Cashel and Tipperary town.

"We have made a commodity out of healthcare and this is completely unacceptable. We must dismantle HIQA and Tusla, and set up a reasonable organisation which will actually look after people," concluded the TD.
