The walk will take place on June 15 in Borrisoleigh.

Borrisoleigh’s local Historical Society will conduct a walking tour of the village on June 15, commencing in the Town Park at 2pm.

A warm invitation is extended to everyone, local residents, all of the parish – both at home and away, and all history enthusiasts, to join with them.

Assembly will be in the Town Park at 2pm, where we will hear about the origins of the local club, the purchase of “the field”, healing the split and the very frequent success that the club has enjoyed.

The penultimate stop of the walk will be a visit to the Church of the Sacred Heart.

There, amongst other stories, we will hear how a mix up in the building plans, resulted in the Church being one of the most ornate in the Diocese of Cashel and Emly.

The day will conclude at the adjacent Community Centre for tea and refreshments.

In between, many stories of days past and forgotten will be recalled and shared.

Some well-known figures, long departed from Borrisoleigh, will return for the occasion and share own particular memories of village life of their youth.

The village of Borrisoleigh is steeped in history, both local and nationally, and has been to the forefront of wars, rebellions and land agitations down through the centuries.

Of equal merit are the accomplishments of the many sons and daughters of the parish that have excelled in their chosen fields of endeavour, be that on the Mission Fields of far away continents, academia, politics or sport.

There were many who never strayed too far distant from the village’s streets but these characters also left their indelible mark on the fabric of life in the locality.
