Top marks for north Tipperary's Tidy Towns groups
Tipperary towns and villages took home a number of awards at this year’s Supervalu Tidy Towns competition.
The results, which were announced, on Friday, rightly recognise the hard work of volunteers in Tipperary.
In north Tipperary, Terryglass came first in the county with 370 points, an increase of nine on last year. The adjudicator complimented the village’s team of 30 volunteers on the new sculpture, the installation of solar compactor bins and their biodiversity initiatives. They said: “It was a pleasure to spend an afternoon in Terryglass.”
Birdhill came second in the county with 363 points, up 11 on last year. The adjudicator said in their report that the planting and soft landscaping was the best they had seen. They commented on the Railway Garden, information signs and the group’s support for other tidy towns.
Nenagh and Roscrea received bronze medals in Category E. The adjudicator said it was ‘a pleasure’ to be in Nenagh and complemented the built heritage initiatives, events and car parks. Nenagh increased its marks from 336 last year to 353.
In Roscrea the adjudicator said they were ‘impressed’ and ‘grateful’ for the time taken on the entry.
They praised Roscrea’s inclusion of all age groups, asylum seekers and students in their work and complimented the town’s ‘cool’ shopfronts and gardens, saying they had a “really pleasant visit.”
Moyglass took home the Endeavour Award. The adjudicator was impressed with the new group, citing their good work including the play facilities, pollinator friendly efforts and successful litter picks.
Nenagh MD
Nenagh Municipal District say they are very happy with this year’s results.
“2023 was another very successful year for the Tidy Towns Committees across the Nenagh Municipal District. In total, 26 towns, villages or communities in the Nenagh Municipal District entered the competition this year, and the results were truly outstanding.”
Director of Services with responsibility for the Nenagh Municipal District Marcus O’Connor, said that the Tidy Towns competitions are an important component in the efforts of communities to meet environmental challenges in areas such as sustainability and biodiversity.
Nenagh Cathaoirleach John ‘Rocky’ McGrath paid tribute to the volunteers that work tirelessly to improve their areas.
“Each year, we see continuous improvement across the District with communities working together to make their areas better places to live, work and visit. It is truly astounding the work that is being done by volunteers. This inspires and motivates others to do likewise,” said Cllr McGrath.
