Sad news!

Drangan/Cloneen Notes

We extend sympathy to our club president Jimmy Gleeson on the recent sudden death of his son Pat (Patrick) in Slane.

The Gleesons have a long history of involvement with St Patrick’s GAA.

Pat’s grandfather Jim was a selector for the very first St Patrick's teams in 1944 and frequently transported players to matches being one of the few car owners in the parish.

Later Jim became the second chairman of St Patrick’s GAA Club and Chairman of the South Tipperary Board for 13 years.

Jimmy served as club secretary for over a decade and also as treasurer, while his brother Paddy played for Tipperary footballers for over 20 years and also lined out for Munster footballers as well as a club career which yielded South and County Senior and Junior football championships.

Pat himself was a prominent hurler with St Patrick’s while his brothers James and John were also prominent members of St Patricks teams.

The tradition continues with Jamie and Danny Broderick playing for St Patrick’s Hurling and Football teams while Stuart Broderick played for St Patrick’s before transferring to play in Dublin.

But it was in county Meath that Pat gave his greatest service to the GAA where he trained juvenile girls and boys and brought several prominent Tipperary hurlers to help coach the juveniles.

In recent times Pat was probably best known as a Tipperary supporter and would be among the last to leave after a match as he renewed acquaintances with many former and present-day Tipperary hurlers.

May the soul of Pat Gleeson rest in peace.
