Judge MacGrath was described as an "absolute lady"

Tributes have been paid to Judge Elizabeth MacGrath, who passed away last night.

At a sitting of Cashel District Court today, solicitor Gary Kingston said he has known Judge MacGrath for many years.

Leading sentiments on behalf of his colleagues, Mr Kingston said Judge MacGrath was a judge who was “held in very high esteem” and, who “dispensed justice in a fair and kind manner.”

“She was an absolute lady on and off the bench, and I would like to extend my sympathies to her husband Charles and her family,” said Mr Kingston.

Court Registrar Denise Fitzgerald extended her sympathies on behalf of the court staff.

“As Mr Kingston said, she was an absolute lady. Everyone who came before her, she was very fair to them. And on a personal note, she will be missed,” said Ms Fitzgerald.

Judge Cephas Power said that Judge MacGrath “served with distinction” and “the people in her district were very lucky to have her.”

He said that was evident in the tributes he read for her before today's court sitting.

Judge Power said that his late colleague was always willing to help and share her knowledge on and off the bench.

The movable district court judge paid tribute to Judge MacGrath’s work on various committees, including her time as President of the Association of Judges and as their elected representative on the Judicial Council.

“Her loss will be felt by all of us,” said Judge Power.

Judge MacGrath was the judge assigned to District 8 which includes Nenagh and Thurles.

Her brother Joe MacGrath is the recently retired CEO of Tipperary County Council and her brother Michael MacGrath a judge in the Court of Appeal.
