The late Pierce Purcell gave decades of service to St Mary’s Choral Society

St Mary’s Choral Society has paid a moving tribute to the late Pikerce Purcell, a stalwart member who was involved in 54 productions over a 43 year period.

A former teacher at Clonmel CBS High School Mr Purcell passed away on Wednesday of last week and removal takes place today (Wednesday 21st October) to the Island Crematorium, Cork, for a cremation ceremony.

The committee and members of St Mary’s Choral Society paid the foollowing tribute -

“ Pierce was a much-loved member of the society, serving as rehearsal pianist for over four decades and making an extraordinary contribution to its musical life. He first joined St Mary’s in 1971 for the production of La Vie Parisienne and went on to be involved in 54 productions over a 43-year period, both as rehearsal pianist and, on occasion, as a member of the orchestra. His dedication, musical talent and commitment to the society earned him the title of Honorary Life Member 13 years ago, a fitting recognition of his remarkable service.

Throughout his many years with St Mary’s, Pierce was always available, generous with his time and unfailingly patient. Whether accompanying chorus rehearsals in Gordon House and the White Memorial Theatre or helping auditionees prepare for that all-important audition, he was a reassuring presence and a valued friend to performers of all ages. His contribution went far beyond the piano, as his quiet encouragement and willingness to help played an important part in bringing countless productions to life. His musical talents also extended to the annual Presentation/CBS High School production and to Hogan Musical Society in Fethard, where he served as Musical Director.

St Mary’s was very much a family affair for Pierce. His beloved wife, Maureen, designed and painted sets for numerous productions, while all four of their children became involved in the society. Andrew performed as Kurt in The Sound of Music in 1979 and also played in the orchestra on several occasions. Ruth and Rachel were members of the children’s chorus in many productions, while Ian took on numerous roles, including Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar in 2011. Pierce’s daughter-in-law, Áine, has also continued the family’s connection with the society, most recently taking part in the April production of The Clockmaker’s Daughter. The Purcell family’s long-standing involvement reflects the special place St Mary’s held in Pierce’s life and the lasting legacy he leaves within the society.

Pierce’s passing is a great loss to everyone at St Mary’s Choral Society. His musical gifts, kindness, patience and unwavering dedication will be remembered with deep affection, and he will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of working alongside him. The committee and members extend their heartfelt sympathy to Maureen, his children Ruth, Andrew, Rachel and Ian, his beloved grandchildren, and the extended Purcell and Cantwell families at this sad time. We take comfort in imagining that Pierce will already have found a piano in Heaven, where he will be tinkling the ivories and accompanying an amazing chorus alongside the many beloved members who have gone before him.”
