'Disgraceful scenes' at Tipperary lakeside location as hot weather draws crowds

Disappointing behaviour in one of Tipperary’s best spots on a sunny day

Hot weather in Ireland is a scarcity and, when we're lucky enough to get it, of course it draws us all to the nearest watering hole with ice creams, disposable barbecue setups and beer cans in hand. With crowds descending on these waterside locations, we sometimes have to accept that people enjoy things in different ways. Some are happy to lie back on a towel and bake in the heat, while others are drawn to the water and the temptation of finding the nearest high thing to jump from into its cool embrace.

For the most part, there's nothing wrong with that. After all, everyone has their own idea of what makes for a perfect summer's day.

Jumping into the lake, swimming for hours and hanging around with friends is a treasured part of childhood, particularly for those lucky enough to grow up near Lough Derg. Many of us can remember the excitement of a scorching summer's day and the tendency to get a little more carried away than usual when school was out and the sun was shining.

Unfortunately, things got a little out of hand at a number of locations around Tipperary this week, with a small minority displaying behaviour that raised concerns on more than one occasion.

In Garrykennedy, residents reported litter, broken glass and disorder following a busy evening by the lakeshore on Thursday. A post shared on the Nenagh Community News forum described "disgraceful scenes" the following morning, claiming there had been drinking and fighting in the area and that one young man suffered a broken nose. The contributor also said they returned with their daughter to collect a full bag of rubbish and reported finding smashed bottles along the forest walk.

Concerns were also raised in nearby Dromineer, where community representatives warned parents to remind children and teenagers to stay away from the harbour after what they described as a near miss involving a boat. We all want to enjoy the sunshine, but harbours remain busy spaces where safety has to come first.

And let's be honest, if you're looking for peace and quiet, Garrykennedy on the hottest day of the year probably isn't the place to find it. People are entitled to enjoy themselves and make the most of the good weather while it lasts. At the same time, though, there comes a point where that enjoyment can start to impact others, and when large crowds gather around the water, safety and security have to remain the priority for everyone.

You're never going to get everyone to pick up after themselves and you're never going to convince people to keep the noise down completely when they're enjoying a summer's day with friends. But perhaps there is a case for a greater Garda presence at some of these locations when temperatures soar and crowds inevitably follow.

Stories of dozens of people drinking and fighting into the night are not something that should be associated with one of Tipperary's most valuable tourist destinations, and it does raise questions about how such situations are allowed to continue for as long as they do.

The hot spell may be over for now, but it's worth bearing in mind if and when the next one arrives. We all wait long enough for good weather in Ireland, so it would be a shame if a few people getting carried away spoiled it for everyone else. A little consideration for one another, and for the places we're lucky enough to enjoy, goes a long way towards making sure those rare sunny days can be enjoyed by all.
