Exciting brand new heritage trail launched in local Tipperary town

The Sli Dhurlais Heritage Trail is a new self-guided historical tour around Thurles town
The Sli Dhurlais Heritage Trail is an initiative of Thurles Lions Club and was officially launched on Saturday last in The Source Arts Centre.
The trail invites you to take a step back in time and explore Thurles on foot.
This heritage walk leads you through the town’s most iconic landmarks and hidden corners, uncovering stories of rebellion, religion, and everyday life from centuries past to the present day.
Using innovative technology, a QR code on each sign allows those walking the route to access online audio and video content associated with each individual stop along the trail.
Jointly funded by the Lions Club and Tipperary County Council and with LEADER grant assistance from North Tipperary Development Company, the trail has a total of 12 stops and starts at Liberty Square. The walk visits key locations that tell the story of Thurles.
Along the way, you’ll experience a mix of castles, churches, graveyards, and streets that show how Thurles grew from a Norman market town to the vibrant community it is today.
Each stop reveals a new layer of history, making this walk a perfect way to explore the town at your own pace.
Mary Slattery, President of Thurles Lions Club, and Cllr. Sean Ryan, Cathaoirleach of Thurles Municipal District, formally launched the trail before a large gathering.
The idea for a town heritage trail grew from the Lions Club’s involvement in the recent refurbishment of The Stanwix Home and the recognition that these Victorian alms house’s hidden history deserved greater attention.
To improve the walker's experience and aid accessibility, each stop also features its own optional audio narration, sharing the stories and significance of the location as you arrive.
A full transcript is also provided at every point, ensuring the content remains fully accessible for those who are hearing impaired, or those who just prefer to read along.
Indeed, as highlighted at the official launch, a person can enjoy the entire trail from the comfort of their own home by simply logging on to www.slidhurlais.ie.
Each stop is designed to support a flexible, self-guided experience, inviting you to discover the story of Thurles at your own pace.
