Members of Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District have given the green light for the replacement of a pedestrian rail bridge.

The bridge connects Saint John’s Terrace and Clairin Close.

The works will include the clearance of the site and the removal of the existing bridge.

A new precast concrete footbridge will be installed and the replacement bridge will also allow for approach ramps and upgraded public lighting and drainage.

The development site is located 1.4km west of the train station and 260m north of the N24 on Clairin Close.

The plans for the scheme were made available for public inspection in September and October.

NO SUBMISSIONS

No submissions were received during the public consultation period.

Proposing that the council proceed with the plans Cllr Kieran Bourke said he was surprised that there were no submissions following the public consultation period.

Chairman Cllr David Dunne seconded the proposal.

POOR SHAPE

Cllr Dunne described the bridge as an essential link to the town.

“It was in very poor shape and it is an important project,” said Cllr Dunne.

Officials told the members that it was hoped that the project would go out to tender in the second or third quarter of next year.

All of the members on the council supported the proposal and gave their backing for the development to proceed.
