Interview with Tipperary man Patrick Walton winner of the Mr Personality 2026 contest

Patrick Walton impressed judges with his personality, wit and talent in Kilkenny
Ballingarry native Patrick Walton took the overall Macra Mr Personality title after a competitive weekend in Kilkenny, while South Tipperary’s Aidan O’Loughlin also featured among the national line-up.
The festival, held at Langton’s Hotel on April 10th and 11th, is a key fixture on the Macra calendar. Organised by Kilkenny County Macra and sponsored by Kilkenny and Carlow District Farm Relief Services, it brings together members of Macra from across Ireland to showcase personality, talent and community spirit.
A total of 25 contestants took part, including Patrick Walton representing Kilkenny Macra and O’Loughlin representing South Tipperary through Golden Vale Macra.
The weekend opened with on-stage interviews hosted by MC Aindriú du Paor, where contestants were introduced to the audience and assessed on their humour, character and range of talents.
The first night concluded with live music and entertainment that continued into the early hours. Saturday’s programme combined private judging interviews with a series of group activities.
The festival atmosphere was complemented by additional activities across Kilkenny, including a scavenger hunt and live performances.
Attention then turned to the gala banquet on Saturday evening, where a large crowd gathered to bring the festival to a close. The atmosphere was lively throughout the night, with entertainment from ‘Sweet Freedom’ setting the tone before the final announcement of the winner. Guests and contestants enjoyed the chance to relax and reflect after a busy weekend of events.
As the evening went on, anticipation grew in the room. All 25 contestants had taken part in interviews, stage appearances and social activities over the course of the festival.
These were designed to test confidence, personality and ability to represent the organisation, both locally and nationally.
After a closely contested competition, Patrick Walton was named Mr Personality 2026. Joe Hennessy of Limerick placed second, while Jack Murphy of UCC Macra finished third. All three finalists received strong applause from the audience, reflecting the high standard across the competition.
Patrick’s professional background is in electrical engineering. He works on a building site in Dublin, focusing on quality control. His role involves inspecting installed systems to make sure they are working correctly and meet required standards on site.
Speaking to the Tipperary Star after his win, Patrick said, “It was so much craic for the weekend. I met 25 lads and honestly they were all brilliant.”
He said the social side of the festival stood out most. “The highlight for me was meeting the other contestants and having fun with them. That is what the festival is all about.”
Patrick also impressed during the talent section of the competition. For his special talent, he performed the song “Mr Brightside” on stage.
Looking ahead to his year representing the festival, Patrick said he wants to focus on raising awareness of Macra. “I want to start by making people aware of what Macra is because not many people know what it is. Anyone can join between the ages of 17 and 35 and it is not just for farmers and that is the point I want to drive home. Because currently two thirds of the Macra members are not farmers.”
He said the experience has also had a lasting impact on him personally. “On the festival you make friends for life. I now know lads from Sligo, Kerry, Wexford and Dublin, so from all corners of Ireland I now have friends from this experience.”
The event continues to be an important social highlight in the Macra calendar.
