Local school move to acquire land on site of former Tipperary barracks

Tipperary North TD Alan Kelly recently enquired about the future of Nenagh Barracks
A local school has expressed an interest in acquiring land on the site of a former barracks in County Tipperary.
Tipperary North Labour TD Alan Kelly enquired about the future of Nenagh Barracks in a recently submitted written parliamentary question.
Deputy Kelly asked the Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee, what “actions have taken place” regarding the future of the barracks since she met with local TDs last July.
In her response, Minister McEntee explained that a local school has expressed an interest in acquiring some of the lands at the site.
She stated: “Following the meeting with my officials referred to by the Deputy, I understand that a local school expressed an interest in potentially acquiring some of the lands in the former barracks for future expansion.
“My officials met with representatives from the school and are awaiting further engagement in order to move forward.”
Minister McEntee went on to explain why she is unwilling to speculate on the future of the former barracks.
“As the Deputy will appreciate, I am anxious to ensure that any local educational needs are prioritised.
“As such, we are not in a position to commence any further analysis of the potential future use for the remainder of the barracks until the outcome of discussions with the local school are complete.”
She did not disclose the name of the school in question.
