Councillor Pat English urges Tipperary to put people first by making individual rights the heart of its housing policy, ensuring everyone can access a safe home. Adequate housing is more than just having a place to stay; it is a basic human right that means safety, peace, and dignity. A real home should be comfortable, affordable, easy to get to, and safe, close to jobs and important services. It must provide basic amenities like clean water and toilets, and respect the cultural needs of the people living there.

Ireland faces a significant housing crisis. More than 14,400 people are homeless, and 270,000 households experience shortages, high rents, and long waiting lists. Limited supply has driven a 91% increase in average house prices from 2015 to 2024. As a result, two-thirds of adults aged 18 to 34 still live with their parents due to unaffordable housing.
