Data shows that almost 7% of tests conducted in Tipperary since January 1 have come back with a dangerous failure result

45.7% of cars that went for NCT tests since the start of 2026 in Tipperary failed the test, across both the Cahir and Nenagh test centres.

Of this 45.7%, 6.81% of them were considered to be dangerous fails.

From January 1 to April 2 of this year, a total of 19,434 tests were undertaken in Tipperary, with 7,557 being classed as major fails, while 1,324 tests resulted in a dangerous fail result.

10,673 tests were carried out in Cahir, with 5,908 vehicles passing, 4,099 coming back as major fails, and 666 of them coming back as dangerous failures.

This brings the pass rate in Nenagh to 55.35%, the major failure rate to 38.41%, and the dangerous failure rate to 6.24%.

8,761 tests were carried out in Nenagh in that same period, with 4,645 vehicles passing their tests, 3,458 coming back as major fails, and 658 resulting in dangerous failures.

This comes to a 53.02% pass rate, a 39.47 major failure rate, and a 7.51% dangerous failure rate.

Nationwide in this same period, 470,489 tests were carried out, with 237,856 resulting in a pass, 198,080 tests resulting in major failures, and 34,553 coming back with a dangerous failure result.

This brings the nationwide pass rate to 50.62%, the major failure rate to 42.07%, and the dangerous failure rate to 7.32%.

This indicates that Tipperary’s pass rates, in both Cahir and Nenagh, are above the national average.

The average dangerous failure rate in Cahir is lower than the national average, however the rate in Nenagh is slightly higher.

The test centre with the highest pass rate in the country is Deansgrange, at 57.9%, while the centre with the highest rate of dangerous fails is Sligo, at 9.56%.

Regarding the average waiting time between the booking of an NCT test and the undertaking of the test in March of this year, the average first slot days for Cahir was 12.75, with the average second slot days at 15.79 days.

In Nenagh, the average first slot days was 13.66, with the average second slot days being 15.77.

This puts both centres below the national average, which stood at 12.38 average first slot days, and 14.68 average second slot days.

The booking lead time is calculated as the average number of days between the point of request for an appointment and the first or second next appointment date or the date confirmed by the driver.
