A man who was involved in a disturbance in Newport brandished a knife when gardaí called to the scene, Nenagh District Court was told.

Lee Browne, 29, of Cloonyconry, Kilbane, county Clare, pleaded to production of an article in the course of a dispute at Glen Wood, Newport, on October 3, 2021.

The court heard that when gardaí arrived they observed two males shouting at each other.

Mr Browne was observed to leave the house via the back door holding a knife.

He then walked towards the gardaí brandishing the weapon while at the same time roaring and shouting.

The knife was secured by the gardaí.

The court heard Mr Browne had 18 previous convictions.

His solicitor, Johnny Spencer, said that Mr Browne had been in a dispute with his uncle but he was glad to report they were back on good terms.

Mr Browne had issues with the drugs at the time but was not involved with drugs any more, said Mr Spencer.

He said his client, who was doing a plastering course at present, had apologised to the gardaí.

Judge Elizabeth MacGrath sentenced Mr Browne to six months in prison, but suspended it for two years on his own bond of €250.

She took a charge of threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour into account.

Recognizance were set in Mr Browne’s own bond of €250.
