Ardfinnan author and illustrator Katie Meaney launches debut children’s book celebrating neurodiversity

Katie Meaney will launch her debut children’s book, ‘Stevie The Autistic Squirrel’, at Cahir House Hotel on Thursday 19 November at 7pm. Designed for children aged six to eight, the beautifully written and illustrated story celebrates creativity and the power of unique minds. All profits from book sales will be donated to Ancaire, National Learning Network, Clonmel to support its autism outreach services.

According to experts, early representation matters deeply; when children on the autistic spectrum see themselves reflected positively in stories, it fosters a sense of belonging and pride. Equally, books like this help their peers understand and celebrate differences, moving us closer to a society where every person is accepted and included just as they are.

Hosted by MC Judith Shorthall, one of Katie’s former teachers at Coláiste Dún Iascaigh, the celebratory evening will feature short extracts from the book, read by Katie, her friend Grace O’Mahony (a primary school teacher) and Katie’s former Special Needs Assistant, Gerardine Hickey. The event will also feature refreshments and musical entertainment by local performers. Admission is free and all are welcome.

A Message of Hope

Commenting on the launch, Katie said, "This story is dedicated to every individual on the autistic spectrum. Having been diagnosed when I was ten, I know exactly what it’s like to see the world through Stevie’s eyes. As a child, I struggled to read, write and even speak, but I was lucky to grow up in a kind-hearted village, surrounded by my supportive parents, family, friends, teachers and SNAs who helped me achieve my potential. Today, one in 20 school-going children in Ireland is reported to be autistic. While I personally know that autism presents its own challenges every single day, it’s always worth navigating through. I know this because today, I’m a writer, an artist and a dreamer with autism."

Kitty Galvin Hennessy, Area Manager at the National Learning Network, Clonmel said, "We are grateful to Katie and her parents for choosing us as the beneficiary of her wonderful book. These funds will directly support Ancaire, NLN’s autism outreach service in Clonmel, helping us continue to provide vital community inclusion and social connection programmes for adults in the area. Katie is an inspiration and we are very proud of her achievements."
