A stalwart of bingo in Tipperary Town has stood down after 30 long years running the weekly events in the town

After 30 years of unwavering dedication, Tipperary Town community stalwart Ann O’Dwyer has officially retired from her role as manager, caretaker, and the heartbeat of The Marian Hall and its legendary weekly Bingo.

Alongside her devoted husband Liam, Ann has been the cornerstone of local community life, keeping the hall’s doors open for generations of dance groups, live events, charity shows, fitness classes, and groups like the Legion of Mary.

The extraordinary journey began more than three decades ago at a routine community meeting.

Following a public callout for someone to step up and care for the building, Ann was approached and asked if she would temporarily take the reins. Little did she know that a simple "yes" would turn into a 30-year legacy of selfless service.

While Ann admits that saying goodbye to the role was incredibly difficult, she knew the time had finally come to step back.

A Heartfelt Final Bingo

Ann’s final night hosting the Sunday night Bingo on August 30th was filled with emotion, laughter, and overwhelming gratitude. The tightly knit Bingo community gathered to surprise Ann, presenting her with a generous donation, beautiful floral bouquets, and endless words of thanks.

Archdeacon Eugene Everard took to the stage to deliver a moving speech, praised Ann’s decades of profound service to Tipperary Town. In a light-hearted and touching tribute, the Archdeacon noted that "behind every great woman is a great man," using the moment to warmly acknowledge Liam’s invaluable behind-the-scenes input and support that kept the hall running smoothly for 30 years.

A Legacy of Stage, Song, and Substantial Charity

Beyond the walls of the Marian Hall, Ann is a beloved icon of local theatre. For over 30 years, she was a fixture of the annual Pantomime, famously sharing the stage with her lifelong "partner in crime," Sis O’Gorman. The legendary duo brought boundless joy, slapstick comedy, and magic to thousands of local children and families over the decades.

Ann's passion for the stage also fuelled her incredible philanthropic work. For nearly half a century, she has organized an annual Variety Concert. Last year marked her milestone 44th concert—an unbelievable feat of organizing local talent. Through these concerts alone, Ann has raised over €60,000 for local charities, directly impacting and improving lives across the community.

The Next Chapter

While her days of locking up the hall, managing bookings, and calling the numbers are officially over, Ann isn’t slowing down entirely. True to her vibrant spirit, she is already busy planning her next major charity Variety Concert.

The only difference now? When Sunday night rolls around, Ann won't be working. Instead, she finally gets to sit back, relax, and play a book of Bingo herself. Tipperary Town owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Ann and Liam O’Dwyer. We wish Ann a long, happy, and thoroughly well-deserved retirement!
