Allegedly assaulted 10 people at Kildare homeless shelter

REPORTING RESTRICTIONS

A man has been accused of assaulting approximately ten different people at a homeless shelter in County Kildare.

The accused, who cannot be identified at present due to reporting restrictions imposed by Judge Zaidan, appeared at Naas District Court on Thursday, July 13 last.

He was accused of committing three counts of criminal damage and seven counts of assault during an incident at the shelter earlier this week.

Garda Sergeant Brian Jacob told Judge Desmond Zaidan that when gardaí responded to the incident, the man allegedly assaulted them too.

Sgt Jacob also said that there ‘was a significant amount of damage caused,' due to the incident.

"It's (estimated to be) in the thousands," he added.

It was heard that the motive behind the man's attack is unknown at present.

However, gardaí said that they believe that he was under the influence at the time of the offence.

Judge Zaidan adjourned the case to July 18, which is when a bail application will be heard in relation to the case.

He remanded the man into custody until this date.

At the end of the court session, gardaí recommended to Judge Zaidan that he hold the case in-camera (in private), which he agreed to do, and imposed reporting restrictions on the case.
