An Garda Síochána Kildare offers advice to homeowners this winter

The message from gardai is: 'Lock up, light up – keep your home safe this winter'
As the evenings get darker and the nights get longer, An Garda Síochána Kildare is reminding householders to take a few simple steps to protect their homes as part of the national Lock Up, Light Up anti-burglary campaign.
Burglars often take advantage of darkness and unsecured properties. Don't make it easy for them.
Some simple steps can make a difference:
- Lock Up: Secure all doors, windows, side entrances, garages and sheds.
- Light Up: Use timer switches, sensor lighting or smart lights to make your home look occupied.
- Set Your Alarm: Use your house alarm, even when you are only going out for a short time.
- Protect Your Keys: Keep car and house keys away from windows and letterboxes to prevent fishing.
- Secure Valuables: Keep cash and jewellery out of sight and avoid leaving valuables on display.
- Stay Alert: Keep an eye on your neighbourhood and report suspicious activity to Gardaí.
Remember, many burglaries involve unsecured doors and windows. A few minutes checking your home before heading out or going to bed could save you a lot of distress.
A garda spokesperson said: “Don't give burglars an opportunity. Lock up, light up!”
