CCTV system is 'absolutely essential' for this Kildare town

Money has been provided but red tape is holding it up

There is no immediate prospect of a CCTV system being provided in Naas.

Cllr Fintan Brett urged that one be provided given that €250,000 was set aside for this.

He said it is deeply frustrating that this has not happened and said such a development “is absolutely essential.”

However Kildare County Council said there are significant legal requirements around the implementation of community CCTV schemes and each scheme must be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Under the law,  all such schemes require the authorisation of the local Joint Policing Committee (JPC) before an application is made to the Garda Commissioner.

However JPCs are no longer in place so approval cannot be sought and ”there is not a mechanism currently available” for KCC to progress this.

JPCs will be replaced by  Local Community Safety Partnerships but the regulations governing the LCSPs “are currently awaited.”

KCC also said it “also be noted that there are currently no resources or funding available to progress this request.”
