Dog fights and unregulated dog breeding at Kildare estates

Council tenants should not have to put up with dog fights taking place where they live.
A call has been made for Kildare County Council to provide regulations governing restricted pets “so problematic issues can be dealt with.”
It came from Cllr Nuala Killeen said residents are complaining about noises as well as the unrestricted breeding of dogs.

Cllr Nuala Killeen
“This Is causing problems for some tenants who are vulnerable to the dangers caused by the presence of uncontrolled dogs.”
A Kildare County Council meeting was told that the council’s tenancy agreements outline the position regarding the keeping of pets.
There are four different tenancy agreements depending on the type of unit being let.
These are council owned units or standard leased units where there is no ban on the keeping of restricted breeds and enhanced leased units where the keeping of restricted breeds is not permitted.
In home for life units the keeping of dogs which appear on the restricted list is not permitted.
A tenant or complainant can make a personal application to the District Court, under the Control of Dogs Acts in relation to persistent nuisance caused by a barking dog.
Restriction dog breeds include Bull Terriers, Bull Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Dobermann Pinschers and Alsatians. These need to be muzzled in public, kept on a lead of less than two metres, wear a collar with the owner’s information and be led only those over 16 years of age.
