KILDARE ANIMALS IN NEED: Mrs Whiskers is due to have kittens soon!

Our work with cats is very rewarding and has many different aspects to it. One of those is our maternity unit where we take in as many mothers to be as we can each year.

Most of the time they are friendly

cats that have been abandoned or strayed, and these cats will go into foster for up to fifteen weeks depending on when their kittens are born.

Sometimes we will have feral cats that are heavily pregnant and cannot be spayed at that time.

These cats are kept in outdoor cages where their kittens are born and the mothers allowed to raise them.

These feral mothers usually become quite tame in the time that they are with us. They can then be easily rehomed to farms and stables, and in some cases to families.

Breaking the cycle

Our purpose for this is to prevent another generation of kittens being born into the same cycle of neglect and continuous breeding as their mothers

At present we have five pregnant females and each of these will have anywhere between three and six kittens.

This means up to thirty kittens will be saved and five mothers spayed.

Overall thirty five cats will be prevented from adding to the out-of-control population of cats in our county. It becomes prevention rather than cure and is a long term investment in the future.

We look forward to a great Easter Egg Hunt and Dog Walk on Good Friday afternoon in Punchestown from 2pm to 3.30pm.

Admission free.
