An area created as an attenuation pond  to gather excess rainfall in a housing estate is being used by BMX riders.

Local councillor Brendan Wyse called for Kildare County Council to take action at the Radharc na hEaglaise in Derrinturn where, he said, a child has sustained serious injury.

“It’s an unusual situation,” he told a Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, adding that the area is a hollow in the ground.

“It accepts storm water (and) I’m told it’s the only one in the county,” he added though according to Kildare County Council there are others.

Cllr Wyse said the site is sued as a BMX track and “children from all over come.”placeholder image

He added that he saw “a lad covered in mud” and said it is a bad example of how an area like this should be used.

He said KCC “should make the area safe.”

KCC says that the pond was constructed by the developer in line with the planning  permission for the development and it is “the approved method of drainage management.”

The meeting heard that an expert is working with local authorities in this area and the Derrinturn location will be added to the list of works.
