KILDARE ARTS SCENE: Gaining an insight into animation

placeholder image

Join artist/photographer Brian Cregan on a guided tour of his collection of old cameras and optical toys. Pupils will get the chance to explore and examine ideas like the camera obscura and the invention of photography in a mini museum dedicated to the history of the still and moving image.

They will also learn about the significance of optical and animation toys — among them, the zoetrope and thaumatrope that entertained and amazed people in the 19th century.

As part of the workshop experience, pupils will have the opportunity to make their own optical toy, gaining insight into the principles behind animation and the persistence of vision.

This workshop is suitable for first and second year students.

The residency is supported by a YPCE Bursary from the Arts Council and Riverbank Arts Centre.

Workshops are available from Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 January, 10am and 12:30pm each day.
