Kildare author shortlisted for Irish Book Of The Year Awards

Before Dorothy is set between 1920s Chicago and the Dust Bowl-ravaged plains of 1930s Kansas
Kildare based author Hazel Gaynor has been shortlisted for the An Post Irish Book Awards 2025 in the Popular Fiction Book of the Year category for her latest novel, Before Dorothy.
Set between 1920s Chicago and the Dust Bowl-ravaged plains of 1930s Kansas, Before Dorothy tells the story of a young woman’s struggle to survive, find hope, and build a new life far from home. Known for her evocative historical storytelling, Gaynor once again brings readers a tale of resilience and self-discovery, rich with atmosphere and emotional depth.
Gaynor, who lives in Kildare, said she was thrilled to see the novel recognised by the Irish book community and to be included among such talented writers.
The An Post Irish Book Awards celebrate the best of Irish writing each year, honouring authors across a range of genres. The winners will be announced later this month following a public vote.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the book, Gaynor said she was drawn to explore the untold stories of ordinary people living through extraordinary times.
The novel has struck a chord with readers for its themes of migration, belonging, and courage in the face of hardship.
Before Dorothy continues Gaynor’s strong track record of success, following bestselling titles such as The Girl Who Came Home and The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter.
