Kildare County Council (KCC) has said that it is unsure if refugees will be housed at a site in Clane.

Speaking to KCC at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting on Friday, May 5, Fine Gael councillor Brendan Weld said that he had received information from locals about beds and bins being delivered by articulated trucks around two weeks ago at the old sanatorium at Firmount in Clane.

Cllr Weld added that, since then, there has been further vans and lorries spotted coming and going from the area.

He further said: "I also discovered that back in December, there was a planning application back in December to change it (the old sanatorium) from commercial use to residential use.

"We would like to know what's happening there," he told KCC.

In response to his query, KCC said in its report at the meeting: "The council is not aware of any plans but are seeking clarification from the Department (of Housing)."

A representative of KCC who was present at the meeting reiterated that the council would be following the situation up with the Department.

Cllr Weld also said that he would be in contact with the housing section of KCC regarding the issue.
