Kildare County Council is heeding advice on Storm Austen from Met Eireann

Kildare County Council is urging the public to take precautions ahead of Storm Austen, which is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds across Kildare from Thursday evening into Friday morning.

A Status Yellow Rain and Wind warning for Ireland is valid from 7pm on Thursday, October 22, until 10am on Friday, October 23, with potentially difficult conditions expected overnight and during the morning commute.

Heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, particularly in southern and eastern coastal counties. Strong winds are also forecast across the south, east and midlands, with trees remaining in full leaf and therefore more vulnerable to damage.

The council is advising householders to secure loose outdoor items, including bins, garden furniture, trampolines and temporary structures, before the storm arrives.

Motorists are being urged to exercise caution, allowing extra time for essential journeys and remaining alert for fallen trees, debris and hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are also reminded never to attempt to cross flooded roads, as water depth and road conditions can be difficult to judge.

Although river levels currently have some capacity and tides are relatively low, the council has warned that conditions can change quickly during severe weather. Members of the public are encouraged to monitor forecasts and follow all warnings issued by Met Éireann.

Kildare County Council will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. The public is advised to adjust travel plans where appropriate and take sensible steps to protect themselves and their property.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue over the bank holiday weekend, with a low-pressure system forecast to track across the northwest of the country on Saturday.

The council is reminding residents that taking precautions in advance can help reduce risks and improve public safety during severe weather.
