A defendant who appeared before Naas District Court on Thursday, April 13, was accused of distributing child sex abuse materials (also known as 'child pornography').

The man, who cannot be identified at present due to reporting restrictions imposed by sitting Judge Deirdre Gearty in order to protect the identities of the man's family members, was accused of 11 counts of distributing the materials, in addition to one count of possessing the aforementioned materials.

Judge Gearty was told by gardaí that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed a trial on indictment for the accused.

Garda Sergeant Brian Jacob added that the book of evidence involved was 'voluminous', and that three electronic devices were being examined as a result of the investigation.

The case will return to the court on a date in September, which is when a book of evidence is due to be furnished.

The judge granted bail for the accused until this date.
