KILDARE: Frustrating road junction is to be closed to traffic

A tricky road junction in Sallins is likely to be closed.
Local politician Anne Breen has asked Kildare County Council to permanently close the vehicular exit road at the bottom of the canal bridge in Sallins, at the Central Grill premises.
She told a Naas Municipal District meeting that this should happen in the interests of public safety and this would create the opportunity “for public space for the benefit of the local community.”
Kildare County Council is examining the “rationalisation of junctions on the approaches to the canal bridge with the aim of significantly improving accessibility for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, including cyclists.”
KCC says the “permanent closure of the road is being pursued in this context.”
In the meantime the temporary closure of the route, which expires in January, is to be continued for another year to the end of 2023.
She was supported by Cllr Colm Kenny, who said the junction is problematic for vehicles including lorries and it is “ridiculously difficult” to make a right turn to Clane.”
