A Naas District Court judge said he wants the governor of a prison to attend court if a case hasn't progressed by the next date.

Judge Desmond Zaidan made the comments on Thursday, January 5, during the case of a defendant who was still awaiting an in-house psychiatric report, despite it having been ordered a number of weeks ago.

The defendant appeared via video–link as he was in custody.

The man’s barrister, Aisling Murphy, asked the prison officer to be present to explain the lack of progress, a sentiment that the judge said he agreed with.

Speaking to a prison guard who was beside the defendant, Judge Zaidan said: "Could you tell the governor that if this case does not progress on the next date, I will request that he attend court in-person to explain what is going on.

"If he does not attend, I will find him in contempt of court," he added.
