PUBLIC DISORDER

A woman shocked a Naas District Court judge, gardaí, and even her own solicitor when it was revealed that she had a total of 519 previous convictions.

The revelation was heard in the courthouse on Thursday, December 15, and relates to Denise McNulty, with an address given as Tus Nua, Abigail’s Women’s Centre, Kildonan Road, Finglas, Dublin 11.

Gardaí said that the 44-year-old defendant, who appeared via video-link as she is in custody on other matters, was found unconscious at The Courtyard car-park in Newbridge on January 25 last.

When she was awoken, she became abusive to people nearby.

She pleaded guilty to the offence.

When gardaí revealed her total number of previous convictions, Judge Desmond Zaidan was visibly taken aback.

He admitted that he had never seen a previous conviction record that high; a sentiment which was echoed by Garda Sergeant Brian Jacob and defending solicitor David Gibbons.

When asked by the judge if she was 'proud' of herself for accumulating these convictions, which mainly consisted of thefts, she admitted that she was not proud of herself.

Upon learning that she was not due for release until February 2024, Judge Zaidan imposed a three-month concurrent sentence on Ms McNulty.
