It’s all systems are go for Relay For Life 10th anniversary celebrations at the Curragh Racecourse next weekend.

Taking place on June 10 and 11, the organisers are delighted to announce there will be 20 teams taking part.

Their fundraisers in recent weeks have been exciting and innovative and their final part of fundraising will take place during the 24 hours of Relay.

“The final teams meeting took place this week and our Relay Kildare Ambassador, Brenda Donohue, expressed her amazement at the enthusiasm on display from all teams and indeed is now looking forward to being with us at Relay,” said committee spokesperson, Peter O’Neill.

“All indications at present are for a fine weekend and we encourage the public and supporters, friends, relatives of all those families affected by cancer to come out in their droves to support Relay and Irish Cancer Society.

“Relay is a community based event with lots of entertainment during the 24 hours and we would love to see families coming to the Curragh to experience just what Relay is all about and see how they can be more involved in coming years.”

The event starts at 1pm on the Saturday with the survivors leading the way on the first lap of the path around the candle bags, followed by the Care to Drive team, volunteers and the teams themselves.

This year there are more activities than ever for children and enjoyable live entertainment from many local artistes and groups.

The Candle of Hope Ceremony takes place at approximately 10pm and a large crowd is anticipated to be present.

Peter explained; “Our survivors are now up to over 140 including children, and they will be quite evident in their purple T-shirts. They are the inspiration to others that cancer can be beaten and shows the importance of early diagnosis of this disease.”

Relay draws to a close at 1pm on Sunday with the closing ceremony and the hope is that many who have attended will be encouraged to enter their own teams from their towns, villages or families next year.

“To conclude at relay we celebrate our survivors, remember those lost and now continue the fight back against cancer,” he added.
