Maynooth University came up short 0-12 to 0-10 in their Sigerson Cup battle against Ulster University with Kildare stars Paddy McDermott and Ryan Burke among the team

Sigerson Cup Quarter-final

Ulster University 0-12

Maynooth University 0-10

Two late Ulster University points were enough to see them past Maynooth and into the semi-final stage of this year’s Sigerson Cup. The game was level heading into stoppage time before substitute Lorcan McGarrity edged the home side in front. The undoubted star performer on the day, Conor Cush, then put things almost beyond doubt in the 64th minute with his sixth of the afternoon.

It was start as you mean to go on for Ulster University with Conor Cush opening the scoring after just a minute of play. The lethal corner-forward bookended the scoring tallies on the day with the game’s first and last scores.

There was little to separate these sides all the way through and they entered half-time as close as they started at 0-7 each.

Full-forward Ciaran Daly got the Ulster men ahead after the restart, but it was Maynooth who would have large spells with the ball in the early parts of the second half. The conditions in Jordanstown were a big factor in this game and the Kildare University will be disappointed that they did not make more use of the strong wind at their back in the second half.

Maynooth levelled through Kerry man Luke Crowley before Conor Cush scored for the home side once again. 10 minutes from the end and Crowley was again the man to equalise for Maynooth and make this game 0-9 each coming down the home stretch.

Ulster wing-back Josh Largo Ellis restored his team’s advantage late on before Maynooth levelled again around the hour mark.

The equaliser set the stage for second half substitute Lorcan McGarrity to get an enormous score for his team and the game was then capped off by star man Conor Cush.
