Last weekend, Kildare was buzzing with liveliness as the sights, sounds, and flavors of India came together for the KUSHI (Kildare United Indians for Social Harmony & Integration) Summerfest 2024, drawing a crowd of local residents and members of the Indian community. The event was a joyful celebration of culture and community, bringing people together for a day of fun and festivity. The event was made possible with the unconditional support of Kildare County Council, which provided an event grant to help bring the festivities to life.
The Summerfest featured a variety of performances that highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Indian community. Attendees enjoyed traditional Bharatanatyam dances, live music, and solo art performances, all showcasing the talents of local artists. The day began with the lighting of the kuthu vilakku, a traditional lamp, by community elders, setting the tone for the day filled with harmony and joy. Young entrepreneurs from the community also had a chance to shine. Teenagers set up stalls offering face painting, photo booths, and games, adding a playful touch to the event. Other stalls featured Indian fast food, groceries, art items, clothing, perfumes, and delicious traditional sweets, giving visitors a taste of India’s vibrant culture and creativity.
The Summerfest was honored to host special guests, including Minister Martin Heydon and Mayor Peggy O'Dwyer. Both guests spoke about the importance of cultural integration and praised KUSHI’s efforts in bringing people together. Their presence highlighted how much the Indian community contributes to life in Kildare.
