A call has been made for footpaths just off the main street in Naas to be repaired.

Naas councillor Anne Breen said there she has seen children falling in the area.

She told a Naas Municipal District meeting that the work needs to be done where Basin Street meets South Main Street, near the Kalu retail outlet.

Cllr Breen called for Kildare County Council to investigate the condition and design of the narrow footpath “with a view to improving it in the interests of public safety.”

She was supported by Naas Mayor Bill Clear who said new paths are needed as well as the possible closing off of Abbey Street.

Kildare County Council says a wider project which will entail  the regeneration and

development of the area known as canal quarter is being planned.

This will involve the preparation of a feasibility study which will provide information for this project.

The Abbey Street/Basin Street area will form part of the study area with a focus on regeneration and  decision making about future uses and public realm works.

According to KCC there are no plans to improve or upgrade footpaths “outside of this process.”
