Local councillors 'should have a say in approving residential addresses'

New residential developments across County Kildare are given names that reflect local heritage, according to the county council.

A Kildare County Council meeting was told that the policy is to name “residential and other developments” by using “local place-names or names of geographical, historical, or cultural significance to the site location.”

New estate names have to be agreed with KCC to avoid confusion and duplication. And this is done via a planning condition. KCC has an estate naming committee which assesses suggested names.

Thai is made up of KCC planning staff as well as the Irish officer and library staff.

Cllr Suzanne Doyle said individual municipal district committees should approve new names.

Cllr Chris Pender said local councillors have local knowledge which would be helpful in protecting heritage and historical references.

KCC official Alan Dunney said that the council would welcome any suggestions from the councillors.
