Lighting up Newbridge for the longest night

The Newbridge Samaritans Branch marked the year’s shortest day with the Longest Night campaign, a heartfelt initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by many during the holiday season. With the unwavering commitment of over 70 dedicated volunteers, the Newbridge Samaritans continue to provide essential support to individuals struggling with loneliness, mental health issues, and personal hardships.
Newbridge Municipal District’s mayor and deputy mayor Peggy O'Dwyer and Chris Pender joined the Samaritans team to shine a spotlight on this vital cause. Local businesses and premises throughout Newbridge have embraced the campaign, displaying green tea lights and illuminating their buildings in green as a symbol of solidarity and hope for those in need.
Cllr O’Dwyer said: "The Newbridge Samaritans do extraordinary work year-round, but their Longest Night campaign is a powerful reminder of the need for connection and support during the holiday season. It’s inspiring to see our community come together to spread a message of hope and compassion to those who may be struggling."
Cllr Chris Pender said: "It’s an honour to stand with the Newbridge Samaritans. Their dedication to supporting vulnerable individuals in our community is invaluable. By lighting up in green, we’re showing that help is always available and that no one has to face their darkest nights alone."
Rose Coffey, of the Newbridge Samaritans, said: "The holiday season is a joyous time for many, but for others, it can be an isolating and difficult period. The campaign reminds us all that no one has to face their struggles alone. We are incredibly grateful to the businesses, community members, and public representatives who have shown their support and solidarity tonight. We were also delighted to welcome Kristy Hayes the Samaritan's policy and advocacy office."
Last year’s campaign saw 17 businesses displaying tea lights and five premises lighting up in green. This year, the response has been even more inspiring, with an even greater number of community members joining the effort.
The Newbridge Samaritans invited everyone to get involved by lighting a green tea light in their windows or illuminating their buildings in green. Photos of support can be sent to [email protected], and the organization will proudly feature them on social media.
