Monasterevin, was the place to be for children aged 8-18 years old during the last week of July as the Monasterevin Blueway Kayaking Club, in association with Canoeing Ireland and Kildare Sports Partnership, hosted the much-anticipated 'For the Love of It' Summer Camp.

The event was one of many held at various locations around the country this summer and was organised by international kayaker Hannah Craig from Canoeing Ireland.  It brought together young enthusiasts eager to explore the world of paddle sports while having an unforgettable time.

The primary goal of the summer camp was to introduce children to the joys of kayaking while promoting outdoor physical activity and fostering a love for water-based sports. The participants were in for an exciting week filled with adventure, camaraderie, and the chance to learn various paddle sport disciplines.

The location, the picturesque Grand Canal at Moore's Lock and the charming harbour in Monasterevin, provided the perfect setting for the young paddlers to develop their skills while surrounded by nature's beauty.

Throughout the week, the children had the opportunity to engage in various activities tailored to their age and skill levels. The emphasis on fun and participation ensured that every child felt included and motivated to try their best. From basic paddling techniques to more advanced manoeuvres, water polo and racing, they were guided by skilled and passionate instructors Donnacha Farrell and Lee Harding. Many club members were on hand each day providing invaluable support before, during and after each session.

Not only did the young participants acquire essential water sports skills, but they also learned about teamwork, cooperation, and responsibility, as safety on the water was emphasised throughout the course. Many of them discovered a passion for kayaking and watersports that they will hopefully carry with them for a lifetime.

The last day of the course was a special occasion as the club had the honour of welcoming two esteemed visitors, Moira Aston (CEO of Canoeing Ireland) and Ciaran McGuire (Operations Manager). Their presence added a touch of excitement, and the children were thrilled to showcase their newly acquired skills.

As the last day of the camp drew to a close, the joy and satisfaction on the faces of the children and instructors were evident. Memories were created and new passions were ignited. The 'For the Love of It' Summer Camp will be remembered fondly by all, and it will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipated by aspiring young paddlers in the years to come.
