Kildare judge said defendant should be facing more serious charge

A motorcyclist sustained broken bones and was placed in a coma after a road accident, Naas District Court was told.

This prompted criticism from Judge Desmond Zaidan who noted that the defendant, who is living abroad, was charged only with dangerous driving - instead of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

He said one charge carried an imprisonment term of six months while the latter could result in a custody term of 10 years.

“That’s the position the State is putting me in. It doesn’t make sense,” said the judge.

The accident took place on March 17, 2024, on the N81, at Haylands, Blessington.

Judge Zaidan adjourned the case to June 4 and he certified for an interpreter to be present for the hearing.
