A Fine Gael councillor has warned Kildare County Council (KCC) about a 'pinchpoint' in Maynooth.

Cllr Tim Durkan made the comments at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which was heard on Friday, October 6 last.

He asked KCC at the meeting if it has any plans to install safety railings along the Royal Canal under Mullen Bridge in Maynooth.

When KCC replied that it had no plans to install safety railings, Cllr Durkan admitted that he was disappointed by this.

He said: "It is a pinchpoint, there is a danger there, so I will again ask for the railings to be installed."

Cllr Durkan added: "There has already been a fatality there once before, so I would like to avoid something like that from happening again."

Cyril Buggie, an engineer with KCC, told Cllr Durkan that he would raise the matter with the National Transport Authority.
