PHOTOS: Driver abandoned car in cold snap but was tracked down by gardaí and may face prosecution

This was the scene when a driver crashed into a fence and abandoned his vehicle.

Garda said the incident happened in Co Westmeath during the current cold snap.

The vehicle appeared to lose control on a bend in icy conditions and ended up in the grassy margin.

Gardaí said: "The driver failed to report the collision and left the scene, abandoning his vehicle in a dangerous location.

"The driver was tracked down and may face prosecution for leaving the scene of an accident.

"If you are involved in a collision, you must report it to the emergency services so that we know you are safe and so that other drivers do not endanger themselves by stopping to help."
