Public is being asked for ideas about major development planned in Naas

Kildare County Council is seeking proposals and ideas from the public for a new major public development in Naas.
It says it will use the survey to help develop the Naas Canal Quarter for people who live in the area as well as visitors. It will provide an attractive area to visit, enhance public spaces and preserve the local heritage.
The plan is to develop a regeneration initiative which “aims to transform an under-used area in the heart of Naas into a vibrant local hub, attracting new economic and community activity to the area.”
The NCQ is located close to the centre of Naas - west of Main Street, east of Sarto Park, north of Newbridge Road, and south of Abbey Road and Abbey Bridge.
Sonya Kavanagh, KCC’s chief executive, said: “We are committed to making the area a thriving and vibrant hub that reflects the needs and aspirations of the community. This survey is a crucial step in ensuring that everyone's voice is heard in shaping the future of this exciting project.”
She added: “Collaboration is a key element of this project, and KCC is eager to gather insights from residents, workers, and visitors to Naas. To ensure a broad range of voices are heard, we are launching an online survey and we want you to take part and help us shape the future of NCQ.”
The plans are to develop under-utilised sites and buildings; revitalise public spaces; improve pedestrian and cycling paths and create engaging new spaces.
It’s supported by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and aims to attract new businesses, provide diverse recreational opportunities, spark investment, and celebrate the area's rich historical background.
It’s hoped to attract investment and commercial activity while preserving and celebrating the area's heritage.
Sensitive restoration of historic buildings and assets will ensure the past is honoured as a prosperous future is paved, according to KCC.
Key components include the integration and enhancement of existing premises including the new Naas library, the old library building, the Moat Theatre and the health centre. “These efforts aim to reinforce the existing social and cultural fabric of the area.”
The public is invited to complete a questionnaire and the survey will close at 5pm on Friday, August 9. For more information, please contact [email protected] or click on https://forms.office.com/r/k90tA4HvMX
