Recovering drug addict in Kildare court case placed on 12-month peace bond

JUDGE'S DECISION
A recovering drug addict from Kildare who was involved in a domestic violence case against his mother has been placed on a peace bond.
The man appeared before Judge Desmond Zaidan at Naas District Court on Thursday, December 7.
At a previous court appearance, Judge Zaidan praised the man’s mother for her 'heart of gold.'
The mother also told the court that her son had mental health difficulties, which were being amplified by his drug abuse. This sentiment was echoed by the man’s solicitor, Joe Coonan.
The man was brought before the judge following a breach of a domestic violence order.
He admitted that he had become angry in his mother’s home and had 'smashed up' plates and a door in the home.
On the latest date, the judge was told that the man is now sober and is seeking a place in a drug rehabilitation centre.
Judge Zaidan remarked that the man 'looks a lot healthier' than he did the last time he saw him.
Commenting on his situation, the man told the judge: "I don’t have the willpower anymore (to do drugs). I just can’t do it, it’s not worth it."
He also said that he was remorseful over what he had done and wished to apologise to this mother
Garda Sergeant Mary Meade also informed the judge that the man has not come to any garda attention since his last offence.
It was heard that he had three previous convictions, all for road traffic offences.
The judge called the man’s mother into the courtroom, and said that he would place the man on a 12-month peace bond, which the mother approved of.
Judge Zaidan also warned the man that if he breaches the peace bond, he will send him to prison for a year.
He added: "Even if you are seen being drunk in public, you will be in breach of the order, so be careful."
