Schedule of stages to complete highly anticipated bridge in Kildare sought

A substantial funding boost was announced for the project last month
A local councillor asked Kildare County Council (KCC) if it could provide a schedule of stages needed to complete a highly anticipated bridge project, as well as an ambitious road project.
The query follows after the government announced an allocation of at least €20 million in funding for the proposed second bridge for Newbridge, which has been long sought after by local residents.
And at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which took place on Wednesday, July 15 last, Fianna Fáil Cllr Noel Heavey submitted the following question: “Can KCC provide an outline of the schedule of stages to complete the second bridge and Southern Relief Road in Newbridge, following the recent announcement of Housing Infrastructure Investment Fund (HIIF) grant funding to KCC?”

Replying to Cllr Heavey’s motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “Planning is in place for this project, along with funding following the recent HIIF announcement.
“The next stage is to complete the detailed design for the scheme.
“Work on this has commenced and is due to be completed by Quarter 1 of 2027.”
KCC also said: “It is hoped to issue a tender for the construction of the scheme thereafter with a view to commencing works onsite in Q3 2027, with works to be completed in 2028.”
Following this, Cllr Heavey told KCC that he welcomed the funding allocation for both projects.
Referring to the second bridge, he said that this project ‘has been a long time brewing’.
