Spanish Ambassador María Teresa Lizaranzu Perinat, visited a number of attractions in west Wicklow.

Fine Gael TD Edward Timmins accompanied the ambassador and Javier Pardo Puras, First Secretary for the EU Presidency.

Dep Timmins said the visit served to showcase the county’s rich heritage, vibrant communities and outstanding cultural attractions.

The visit was organised in recognition of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and Wicklow’s twinning with Spain.

Accompanied by Mr Javier Pardo Puras, First Secretary for the EU Presidency, the Ambassador visited five locations across West Wicklow, highlighting the people, history and creativity that contribute to Wicklow’s distinctive character.

The visit began at Tearman Community Garden, Baltinglass, where local groups can grow fruit, vegetables and plants while learning about gardening and food production.

At Baltinglass Courthouse, the delegation explored the Hillfort Exhibition, celebrating the area’s significant archaeological heritage.

The delegation continued to Baltinglass Abbey and St Mary’s Church of Ireland to discover the area’s remarkable ecclesiastical history.

Founded in 1148 by Diarmait Mac Murchada, King of Leinster, the Cistercian abbey is an important part of Ireland’s medieval heritage.

In Donard, the ambassador visited the community café, a welcoming space that brings people together and demonstrates the importance of local initiatives in strengthening rural communities.

They also took in Russborough House, one of Wicklow’s outstanding historic and cultural attractions.

Dep Timmins said: "From the community spirit of Baltinglass and Donard to the extraordinary heritage of Baltinglass Abbey and the hillforts, and the art and craftsmanship of Russborough House, the day demonstrated the remarkable diversity of what Wicklow has to offer”.

He said that “behind these places are the local volunteers, historians, community groups and craftspeople who work tirelessly to preserve our heritage and strengthen our communities. They deserve enormous credit for everything they contribute to Wicklow.”

The visit celebrated the many qualities that make Wicklow special, from its rich archaeological and ecclesiastical heritage to its thriving community initiatives, historic houses and exceptional local craftsmanship. Against the backdrop of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, it also highlighted the importance of Wicklow’s connections with Spain and the opportunities to strengthen cultural ties across Europe.
