Speeding lorries in Kilcullen, County Kildare criticised at meeting

The criticism was raised at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting
The speed of some lorries passing through Kilcullen has drawn criticism from councillors representing the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD).
The matter was raised at the latest MD meeting, which was held on Wednesday, September 18 last.
At this meeting, Fine Gael Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer submitted the following motion to Kildare County Council (KCC): "That the council carries out a comprehensive traffic audit in the town of Kilcullen and the approach roads into Kilcullen to include, but not limited to: traffic volume; vehicle movement; peak times, pinch points; speed; and type of vehicles; for the purpose of informing current live and future planning, in particular through the traffic light junction on Main Street, Kilcullen."
Her motion was seconded by her party colleague and Mayor of the MD, Cllr Peggy O’Dwyer, who criticised the speed of some lorries in Kilcullen.
Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender also supported the motion from Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer.
He said: "The speed of some vehicles going through Kilcullen is absolutely abhorrent."
Cllr Pender added: "There is a serious need for a traffic audit there."
In its report at the meeting, and in response to Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer’s motion, KCC said that it 'does not currently have the capacity to carry out a comprehensive traffic audit for Kilcullen.'
KCC elaborated: "This request can be considered in the context of future studies to be completed as part of the development of an updated Settlement Plan for the town, subject to resources."
Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer said that she accepted KCC’s report.
She added: "We need to plan accordingly for future developments [in Kilcullen]."
