Kildare County Council is asked what it’s doing to deal with the issue, especially in Naas

There is concern that there may not be adequate recreational and amenity facilities in Naas over the coming years.

Kildare County Council has been asked what it has done to identify and buy “suitable land” for additional sporting facilities, including pitches and facilities for GAA, soccer, basketball, cricket, bowls, hockey and athletics.

Cllr Bill Clear said this is necessary “to ensure that sporting and community infrastructure keeps pace with population growth.”

He said extensive residential development is planned across the Naas area and there is a requirement that 50% of development levies collected locally are spent within the area.

These levies are paid by developers and builders to KCC as part of planning permission conditions.

KCC said it remains alert to opportunities to acquire strategically located lands for sporting, recreational and community purposes where these are consistent with identified needs, represent value for money and can support the long-term delivery of amenities for local communities.
